Newcastle-built Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns 0-6-0 saddle tank No. 6 (W/No. 7603 of 1949) of Derwenthaugh loco shed stands at the Clockburn drift mine loading point in late summer 1969. It had been transferred from Boldon colliery in July 1968 but was scrapped at Derwenthaugh in October 1972. (Author’s collection)

Scenes of the impressive signalling aspects that graced the railway around Derwenthaugh coke works, installed for the Consett Iron Company Ltd with the construction of the plant in 1929. The signalman in this spacious box at the extreme west end of the site controlled both the main level crossing access road to the coking plant and all rail movements on the main running line, as well as within the coke works sidings themselves; in this case, Austerity 0-6-0 saddle tank No. 7 is in action there on a summer’s morning in 1969.
